is located in Kunitachi, Tokyo. It is held every Saturday at Kunitachi Kominkan (Community Center) located within a stone's throw from JR Kunitachi station. More than half of the regular members live in Kunitachi and its vicinity, but some are all the way from Chiba, Saitama and Kanagwa.
At Kunitachi Debate, about fifteen members, more men than women, attend all the year round. Many of them are on the shady side of life, but they are all eager to join and discuss current topics.
DEBATE PROCEDURE:
Firstly, at 2:00 p.m., a presenter will ask participants to read a handout by turns in order to confirm the topic they discuss. After that, the presenter introduces several debating points to start discussion. (45 minutes)
Secondly, all the participants are divided into two groups so that they can exchange their opinions more freely in small groups. It is like a warm-up to prepare themselves for the debate. It is a sort of bull session. (90 minutes)
Thirdly, they will get back to the former group to debate the proposition all together. They are expected to take either affirmative side or negative side and make some comments on their views. Usually time is too short to have a heated debate on the proposition. The debate is closed at 5:00 p.m. (45 minutes)
At Kunitachi Debate, they are free to join and free to leave anytime they like. Anyone can be a presenter of a proposition. Reading materials are often collected from "TIME", "NEWSWEEK", English language newspapers, the Internet, etc.
